On this exciting threshold of a new digital era for Transmission Gallery, GUR present 'Immaterial Re-becomings', a despondent end-of-year reflection on the point of it all.

Can art have critical independence, or is it held captive by capital? What is contemporary art and why do we keep on doing it? Feeling at a bit of a dead end, but excited about the potentials and ambitions of the website, MC Donalds and DJ Sports hope to address these questions in practice as we broadcast - live - over the internet.

Google Useless Radio are feeling a bit lost in contemporary art, a pervasive sense of futility hangs around our attempts at subversion, critical practice and losing of authorship. Marooned in contemporary art, seemingly light years from an exit point, we invite you to join us on two Sunday afternoons at Transmission to watch, read and chew it all over.

“The effort is made to escape art as we have it… the now familiar emphases on participation, non-art, smuggling, deterritorialisation, inbetweenness, eventhood, indeterminacy, deskilling, etc. all heed this imperative… But as reiterations of the logic of escape, these efforts also perpetuate and entrench the very limitations of art they seek to overcome… This series proposes that for art to have substantial and credible traction on anything beyond or larger than itself, it is necessary to exit contemporary art.”

We hope to watch 2 of 4 screenings a day and read texts too, there’ll be lots of time for chat and breaks. We may or may not have watched/read it all, and hope someone out there can explain it to us, not the other way around!

Post/Anti-Military Radio with Beatriz Santiago Muñoz

GOOGLE USELESS RADIO returns with artist Beatriz Santiago Muñoz. Beatriz will be talking about and playing field recordings produced for her solo show at Transmission Gallery for the Glasgow International Art Festival 2014.


Post-Military Cinema consists of objects, recordings and moving-image works pertaining to Ceiba, a town on the east coast of Puerto Rico. Ceiba was home to Roosevelt Roads, a US Naval Base which remained operational until a decade ago, having occupied Puerto Rican land for over sixty years. Many animal and plant species have begun to return to the base, reclaiming the landscape transformed by oil tanks and bombing. Through entropic forces and life without us, it is becoming something else. The works presented look at the indeterminacy of what that elsewhere might be, how it behaves and what images it creates. Having been accustomed to thinking of Ceiba as a place where an event (the event of the bombing, warfare, military industry) has ceased, we might behave as if we were waiting for another event of the same scale and form. In reality, there are an infinite number of events taking place, the majority of these outside of politics or ideology, free of symbolic weight. Post-Military Cinema engages us in looking at these events taking place right now: what do we see and how do we see them?

It's in an old industrial unit warehouse type building and there's a church space upstairs.
(It's only a short walk from the city centre over the new pedestrian bridge -
the Squiggly Bridge, it's also pretty close to The church seem happy nity using it
for the W Cafe food distribution project as a space for storing and sorting donated food

as well as a space for us to cook and serve a hot meal on Tuesdays. It doesn't have a cooker
(yet) but there is space to put an electric one in.

we fell into each other and into unseen listeners, into infinite analogy and bought the same promiscuous encounter with endless appropriation over and over again- reducible to the same basic process.
we put marx in the mix and dropped the labour theory of value and it was heavy on our minds but more on our libido, our wallets and more.
we brought ghana back on an aeroplane. nothing much happened and there is nothing that from this position and being us that we can say. so we remain silent -spitting out the same old shit as a refusal to embelish anything but let capitals own peculiar decor seep out of every pore.
